Music, one of the most important forms of communication in Mali, disappeared overnight in 2012 when Islamic extremist groups seized control. They Will Have To Kill Us First is a feature-length documentary following musicians in Mali in the wake of a jihadist takeover and subsequent banning of music. It shows how rather than laying down their instruments, Mali’s musicians fought back!
The screening will be followed by drinks, snacks and a virtual concert showcasing Malian music in exile.
The party continues with a live set of funk, soul and Motown from international drumming legend Paul Mills and his Mind Excursion. Originally born in the USA, Paul is now also a legend on the contemporary UK pop circuit, playing arenas with acts like Hue and Cry as well as blowing the roof off clubs like this with his formidable drum licks and incredible voice.
Pay What You Can proceeds donated to the Glasgow Women's Night Shelter for Destitute Asylum Seekers.
